Ek Balam & Mayan Traditions

Overview
Ek Balam, possessor of majestic constructions hidden among large trees of the Mayan jungle, is a site different from all those in the Mayan area and is unlike any other known archaeological site.
It has 45 structures and is surrounded by two concentric stone walls, and another one that joins the central buildings. These walls had defensive purposes and to control access. It has a ball game and a very beautiful arch where a sacbé (sacred path) ended, which in ancient times connected the Mayan kingdoms; There are also stelae and the so-called hieroglyphic snakes, monuments beautifully carved in stone blocks. The structures have various architectural styles, but there are details that make them unique, such as images with wings that resemble angels.
